Multitouch bench with combination of pens for creative professional groups

This innovative project is the final paper of Chamila Perera, graduate in industrial design from Munich University of Applied Sciences. The Multitouch bench with combination of pens is intended for creative professional groups such as designers, architects and graphic designers who perform visual work and are involved every day with sketching, brainstorming, presentations and drafts. In order to optimise the processes in a creative office, the bench should serve as a work surface that combines a conventional bench and the virtual desktop.

The idea was to design an interactive desk for designers who wish to work with as little paper as possible, keep the number of peripheral devices to a minimum and avoid a bothersome tangle of cables. The aim is to demonstrate the things that will be possible in the near future. A concept for an "interactive bench" that not only moves images around but exploits its full functionality with the range of its possibilities. The bench is intended to be an intelligent device that is fun to use and works well in day-to-day life in a creative office and unifies in one device many of the peripheral devices that are now superfluous. This is intended to simplify the operating procedure and, last but not least, assist in reducing the amount of paper used. A 1:1 model made of wood and steel was created. The prototype was christened the Y-Desk.
The Y-Desk incorporates a vertical and a horizontal surface. The two surfaces are touch-sensitive in several ways and act as an interface between the digital and analogue working surfaces. If so desired, the user can mute the table and use the bench as a normal piece of furniture. The bench offers its group of users the functions they need every day, such as scanning, drawing and, last but not least, communications tools such as audio/video conferencing capabilities united in one device. At the same time, the bench offers options enabling personalisation and private use. Several users can actively work at one device, whether completing their work together or independently. Primarily, day-to-day processes are simplified by short distances but the bench is at hand to provide inspiration to the user as part of the creative process.
