Lubrication-free roller bearing in a deburring machine

Profile

What was needed?
Corrosion-free and lubrication-free ball bearings

Requirements:
Wear resistance and corrosion resistance

Industry:
Electronics industry / semiconductor industry

Success for the customer:
The durable xiros deep groove ball bearings made of the high-performance plastic xirodur B180 ensure ideal roller bearings for this circuit board deburring system. They defy the humid environment and are in continuous use after a one-year test run.
Roller bearing in a circuit board deburring machine
In order to be able to support electronic components, a printed circuit board (PCB) is necessary. CONTAG AG is a manufacturer of high-quality PCB circuit boards for the electronics industry. Deburring is necessary to remove the razor-sharp edges created during manufacture. This eliminates the risk of injury during further use of the circuit boards.

Problem

CONTAG AG was looking for a suitable ball bearing for the roller bearing of their printed circuit board deburring machine, which could withstand the humid environment over the long term and is also characterised by wear resistance. In addition, the ball bearing was only allowed to have a minimal bearing clearance at the end of the test. For this, the company tested xiros plastic ball bearings from igus and their metallic counterpart in a one-year comparison test.

Solution

After a year, the xiros ball bearings were able to achieve a good result in terms of service life compared to metal ball bearings. The metallic bearing variant, which had to be completely degreased, corroded quite quickly due to the damp environment, seized and ultimately failed. At the end of the test, there were hardly any traces or differences in terms of wear and the clearance situation for xiros. The plant was completely converted to polymer ball bearings.
